JANUARY 2006
COS NEWSLETTER

NEXT MEETING
Tuesday 24 January 2006 at 19h45
                Athenaeum, Newlands

AGENDA

Special General Meeting

The evening will start with a special general meeting to approve the updated Constitution, a copy of which you will find at the end of this newsletter. Over the years there have been a number of amendments made to the Constitution and the present Committee felt it was time to include these in the printed Constitution booklet. We took the opportunity to modernise some of the language. A lawyer has been consulted and the final product has passed with his approval. Click HERE to examine this revised edition.

Following this, Bes Gous will present a

Tribute to Louis Vogelpoel.

Bes and Frans Gous had the mammoth task of sorting Dr. Louis Vogelpoel's thousands of slides (more than 14 000). These slides reflect not only orchids but his love of plants in general, his family and a keen eye for photography - what better way to honour and remember a man such as he.

There will be a Plant Table, Plant Sales Table and Raffle so come prepared.

MEMBER NEWS
A very Happy New Year to everyone!
May it be special, fulfilling and especially a healthy one for all of you.

Happy birthday greetings this month go to Jean Dryden (14), Percy Olfsen (20) and Meg Hannay (27). Marianna Ellis celebrates her birthday on 1 February so we wish her now as well.
It has been a while since the last newsletter and I have not had much news filtering through to me apart from that Manfred Waltner and Wilferd Duckitt who have not been well and are in need of thoughts and prayers.
Please let me know any relevant news of Members. There is no preferential treatment for news, birthdays etc. but I can only include what I know, so keep me informed - my phone number is listed below.

NOVEMBER MEETING
We had great fun as always at the end-of-year party. If you weren't there you missed out on some wonderful raffle prizes as EVERYONE went home with at least one prize. Thank you to all our Members who brought donations and bought tickets for the raffle and also for all the delicious goodies to eat.

CAPE JUDGING REGION
The monthly judging meetings will probably begin again in February but please contact Ellie van der Hoven (ph. 790 2433 (a/h)) for details. Sheila Smith can be contacted on 558 5820 if you have a plant for judging.

50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Remember this is in 2007. Plans include a bumper exhibition of plants, lectures, socials and pre and post show tours. The exhibitions will extend beyond orchids on display to include photography, cake icing, jewellry, stamps, arts and crafts. Mike Tibbs has a devised a system by which all COS Members will be able to earn a reduction in their registration fee by working during the preparation and duration of the show. The bonus points will be allocated according to the number of hours that you work. Get involved and be part of a really special event to celebrate our 50th birthday!

NAME BADGES
The new format name badges with a magnetic clip at the back can be ordered from Susan Olfsen (ph 021 855 5701) at a cost of R20.00 or see her at the meeting to pay for your order.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS
The Membership renewal subscriptions should have been paid by the 31 December 2005. Many thanks to those who have paid and we look forward to hearing soon from those who have not already done so.

2005 SAOC YEARBOOK - IMPORTANT NOTICE
You should all now have your copy of the 2005 Yearbook. Unfortunately there are some copies that are coming apart. If this is the case with your copy, please send it to Leon Davies, 2 Dentree Road, Weybridge Park, Port Elizabeth 6070 and he will have it rebound. It is very important to include your name and address so it can be returned to you. This offer holds good until the end of January.

COMMENTS FROM THE PLANT TABLE
Our thanks to the following Judges and Learner Judges who commented on the plants this evening: Mike Byren, Bes Gous, Mike Tibbs, Hennie Steyn (visiting from KwaZulu-Natal) and Hendrik van der Hoven Some 'easy to grow' choices for the evening included Mystacidium capense and Promenaea crawshayana from Johnnie Kloppers and Miltonia flavescens and Cattleya maxima from Volkmar Schmidt. Tony Jarvis' Paphiopedilum St.Swithins was an award quality flower with dorsal and synsepal mirroring each other. A really fabulous variety that should be grown on to a more mature plant to reach its full potential and be submitted for award judging. There were some wonderfully fragrant plants on show this evening. Frans & Bes Gous' Slc. Sierra Doll 'Annalet' was a lovely purple with a woody/spicy fragrance. Their Epi. parkinsonianum and Johan Bruwer's Angraecum magdalenae was also perfumed as was Johnnie Kloppers' Mystacidium capense. A point of interest is the varietal name for Wessel Strydom's Lc. Tropical Pointer 'Suwada' is after a television personality in Japan. This plant was a lovely display of 7 flowers.
