COS NEWSLETTER
NEXT MEETING - Note the date and time:
SATURDAY 18 August 2001 starting at 15h00
at Athenaeum, Newlands
AGENDA
"How much do you know?"
The August meeting may just provide
the answer! We will be teasing the brain to remember and produce answers in a fun-filled
afternoon tailor-made to learn and show-off. Come along and enjoy … you may even win a
prize … but if not there will still be lots of laughs and things to learn. It will be a
team effort so nobody need feel intimidated or too "new" to contribute. You may
know a lot more than you think!
It would be great if you could please
bring along a plate of eats to enjoy along with the liquid refreshments provided by
the Society.
There will be the usual Plant Table, so
please bring your plants for comment.
Don’t forget the plant raffle and plant
sales at each meeting.
MEMBER NEWS
August birthday wishes go to Arnold Kottler (10), Brenda Vurgarellis(16), Peter Ryan
(19), Margaret James (21), Wendy Gersie (29) and Stewart Sutherland (30).
Mooly Geben has not been well again and we
ask you to remember him in your prayers and thoughts and hope he is soon feeling strong.
Congratulations to Louis Vogelpoel whose
articles and stunning photographs on Disas recently appeared in the Orchid
Digest. This is a magnificent publication and we are proud that he has attained such
prestigious recognition over the years for his love of and attention to one of South
Africa’s "leading lights" in the orchid world .
There are "golden celebrations"
happening in Durban on 26 August with Ivan and Carmen Coll reaching the magical number of
50 years of marriage. Congratulations and enjoy this very special occasion.
JULY MEETING
Many thanks to Jean Dryden for the opportunity of a look at some of the Cattleyas that
are and have been the leading hybrids over the past years. If you are fond of splash
petals the one that immediately springs to mind is Brassolaeliocattleya Chinese
Beauty ‘ Orchid Queen’.
Thank you to Tricia Owen and Lambit Kaudla
for donations to the raffle table as well as thanks to Volkmar for nurturing and bringing
along the COS stock plants that were bought at the last National Show in Pretoria.
LATEST SAOC AWARD IN THE CAPE
Mike Tibbs’ Cynorkis gibbosa ‘Madagascan Magic’ was recently
awarded an Award of Merit with 81%. If you were at the July meeting you will remember this
beautiful and unusual flower. The plant received a Certificate of Horticultural Merit from
the American Orchid Society in 1999 and Mike reports this flowering to be the best he has
had…2 spikes with 19 and 14 flowers respectively. The flowers were a beautiful
salmon-peach colour with a dark purple blotch on the lip. This is a species from
Madagascar which Mike acquired as a tuber in Holland. He grows it quite damp in sphagnum
moss and feeds it heavily with half strength Peters.
Congratulations!

the veld. He is planning a species outing for September and would welcome information on
any promising local sites.
COMMENT ON THE PLANT TABLE July
2001
Eddie Eveleigh’s Odontocidium Isler’s Goldregen was a worthy first for the
evening with its striking yellow flowers. The spike took 7 months to develop on this very
robust plant.
Sysser Waspe’s Oncidium cheirophorum had
6 spikes of spicy smelling blooms on a plant showing good progressive bulb development.
Sysser’s Brassolaeliocattleya Guess What ‘Doubloon’ also sported much
improvement in culture with 7 stunning orange-yellow flowers. She bought it in 1999 with 2
flowers, flowered it in 2000 with 3 blooms and now the progressively larger bulbs have
rewarded her with 7 flowers.
Greig Russell’s Cymbidium Herbie
Poole ( Cymbidium grandiflorum x parishii) had charming fresh pale green flowers
with a stippled lip held on an arching spike. Greig’s Coelogyne Unchained Melody
was an interesting Coelogyne cristata hybrid from Pieter de Bruin.
Volkmar Schmidt’s Stenorrhynchus
speciosus is a species from Mexico and the West Indies. It had salmon-pink flowers
displayed on a conical inflorescence and visually reminiscent of Disa ferruginea. The
foliage had beautiful silvery mottling.
Laeliocattleya Julie Cee (Laelia
sincorana x Cattleya aclandiae) from the Vurgarellises was a lovely purple. They got
the plant from the Van Rooyens in White River in 1995 and grow it in their lemon tree. We
can always rely on Brenda and Peter to have innovative ideas on culture and to prove that
many orchids are a lot hardier and less fussy about their growing conditions than we
think!
Although the comment was that Johan Bruwer’s
Cymbidium Red Beauty ‘Netty’ 4N x Gold Beach ‘Ezigro’ was not the most
solid colour form seen of this cross, it was nevertheless a pleasing full-shaped flower.
The influence of the Red Beauty parent was very evident. There were 10 flowers on an
upright spike. The red flowers appeared "paintbrush stroked" with a yellow lip
edged with deep maroon and striking maroon stapeloide markings disappearing into the
throat.
