JANUARY 2003
COS NEWSLETTER

NEXT MEETING
TUESDAY 28 JANUARY 2003 starting promptly at 19h45 at Athenaeum, Newlands(Cape Town).

AGENDA

An Overview of the Terrestrial Orchids of the Cape Region
By Hendrik van der Hoven

Many of our Members have shown an increased interest in the local indigenous orchids and have avidly investigated flowering sites and followed ‘burn areas’ to document the species seen. Hendrik is just such a Member and has agreed to share his finds. It is a good time to be out on a nature walk, so come and see what it is that should be catching your eye.

As usual, there will be a raffle table and the opportunity for Members to sell plants (10% of your profits to be donated to the Society).

MEMBER NEWS
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and start to 2003. May the rest of the year be all you wish for.
I only have 2 listed birthdays for January! A happy day to Jean Dryden(14) and Meg Hannay(27). If you would like to be wished for your day, please check the birthday list at the next meeting and add your details.
Virginia Russell recently had a back operation, which severely curtailed her mobility. We hope all the discomfort will soon be over.

NOVEMBER MEETING
Thank you to everyone who provided goodies and bought tickets to make the raffle a really great success and, of course, a very big thank you to Ludwig Swart who added his very special flare to the proceedings. As usual, the tables were laden with wonderful things to eat and if the level of noise was anything to go by, everyone had a good time.

RAFFLE PLANTS
The Society has continued to use the profits of the Members’ Sale Table at our shows to buy in plants from nurseries around the country. The rationale is that Members will have the opportunity to have access to something different but suitable for the general growing conditions in the Cape. We will ensure that there are 2 of these plants available on the monthly raffle at our meetings but greatly appreciate the contributions made by you…not everybody has the “good old faithfuls/ easy-to-grow” etc. Thank you to those who have and will continue to support the raffle in donations and monthly ticket purchases, as the takings also go towards paying for the tea and coffee at the monthly meetings.

GREYTON OUTING
We were planning an outing to Greyton for late January/ early February, but the orchid flowering is rather disappointing this year, so on advice from John Duff, we have cancelled this outing.

Library news
Please return all books by the January meeting.
A stocktaking is planned for the morning of 1 February 2003 and volunteers to help will be appreciated. Please contact Rachael Braver (ph. 5570986) for details
.
This is the first step towards making the library more functional and user-friendly, so please offer whatever assistance you can.
No books may be borrowed until the stocktaking is complete.

NATIONAL SHOW & CONFERENCE – PIETERMARITZBURG 26 – 28 September 2003
Please earmark potential plants that could be sent to the National Show and pay them the extra attention that may result in a trophy winner. The Society will be staging an exhibit at the Show so will need YOUR plants and/or cut flowers. We will keep you informed of the arrangements but if you have any suggestions or queries, please contact a Committee member.

All our efforts will be directed towards the National Show at this time, so we will only be having a local Autumn Show in May 2003.

COMMENTS FROM THE PLANT TABLE
Sysser Waspe’s Wilsonara Tiger Brew had an interesting water mark pattern on the salmon pink petals and a lovely yellow lip. The flowers were on a branched spike.
The Paphiopedilum delenatii was a seedling from the newly discovered population in Vietnam. It was a delicate pink with possibly a longer stem than usual and seems to be easier to flower.
Volkmar Schmidt’s antelope Dendrobium strebloceras (from the Far East) had canes about 1 metre long but they can get at least a third longer. This was the third flowering on the old cane.
Jacques Jefthas is to be congratulated on his usually ‘difficult to grow’ Renanthera Draddkie Chandler ‘Orchid Heights’ x Mona Chiga. It had clean bright orange flowers and was beautifully grown.
The perfumed selection would include Sobennikoffia robusta with its lovely white flowers and beautifully grown example from Eric Harley; Opsistylis Surre from Hans Cordoba; Sysser’s Vandofinetia Blaupunkt and Vic Baber’s Miltonidium Rosy Sunset which was similar to its one parent Oncidium ornithorhyncum, but had bigger and better spaced flowers.
